Griffith Hosker was born on September 12, 1894, in the village of Gillingham, Dorset, England. From a young age, he exhibited a keen interest in aviation. After completing his education, Hosker joined the British Army in 1914, eager to contribute to the war effort.

Hosker's first aerial victory came on August 25, 1916, when he shot down a German Albatros D.II over the Somme.
